2010
NONPROFIT OUTLOOK
The past year
has been tough for nonprofits, and two new reports show that most
organizations expect 2010 to be an even tougher year, with even
more funding challenges and still more demand for services to those
in need.
The 2010 economic
outlook for nonprofits is affected by changes in all of the nonprofit
sector’s major revenue sources: charitable giving from individuals,
foundation grants, county and state contracts, and consumer buying
decisions. Each of these sources is under pressure from the downturn
in the economy and the stock market, but the effects on nonprofits
can vary depending on an organization’s activity area, from
arts to human services to health care.
Two reports
were released on December 18, 2009: Nonprofit Current Conditions,
December 2009 and the 2009 Nonprofit Economy Report.
What
we found:
Minnesota's nonprofits have already made difficult decisions in
response to an increase in demand for services and decline in total
donations and revenue.
- Sixty percent
of organizations reported an increase in need for services, compared
with 42 percent in 2008.
- The ability
to meet this increase in need for services is undercut by the
reduction in revenues to these organizations. .
- The types
of organizations most frequently reporting declining total revenue
were environment related, education and employment/jobs related.
- Human service
organizations were the most likely to maintain or grow levels
of donations.
- Organizations
with budgets under $400,000 have faced the most difficulty in
2009.
- To manage
the effects of the economy, organizations are reducing number
of employees, implementing hiring and salary freezes, and reducing
employee benefits.
- The Recovery
Act of 2009 provided opportunities for nonprofits to apply for
federal funds, and many did.
- Ninety-one
percent of organizations report receiving individual contributions,
and half of these saw their contributions decline in 2009.
- Respondents
to the survey predict an even gloomier 2010.
