Aspen Institute Nonprofit Sector Research Fund

The Nonprofit Sector Research Fund awards research grants and organizes convenings to expand knowledge of the nonprofit sector and philanthropy, improve nonprofit practices, and inform public policy related to nonprofits.

Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA), University of Minnesota
CURA is an all-University applied research and technology center at the University of Minnesota that connects faculty and students with nonprofit organizations, ethnic and racial minority groups, businesses, rural towns, inner-city neighborhoods, suburban communities, local governments, and public agencies in Minnesota.

Guidestar.org
In addition to its other products and services, Guidestar.org provides a searchable, national database of nonprofit financial information (IRS Form 990), provided by the IRS.  The service is easy-to-use and free of charge.

Independent Sector
Independent Sector is a national coalition of nonprofits, foundations and corporations formed to strengthen nonprofit initiative, philanthropy and citizen action.  Independent Sector publishes a number of reports on the sector, including the New Nonprofit Almanac, produced in conjunction with the Urban Institute.

Minnesota Attorney General - Charities Division
The Minnesota Attorney General - Charities Division has a number of resources on their website, including sample forms, laws and policies.  The site includes a searchable database of Minnesota nonprofits which are currently registered with the Attorney General's office.

Minnesota Budget Project
The Minnesota Budget Project - an initiative of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits - provides independent research, analysis, and outreach on budget and tax policy issues, emphasizing their impact on low- and moderate-income Minnesotans and the organizations that serve them.

The National Center on Charitable Statistics
A project of the Urban Institute, the NCCS gathers financial and descriptive data on nonprofit organizational activities and works to promote the highest standard of data collection.  The NCCS developed the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) to serve as a common language for charitable organization classification and to provide a better fit with the IRS's classifications for exempt entities.  The NCCS also publishes the State Nonprofit Almanac, which includes statistical profiles for each state.

Rainbow Research
Rainbow Research's mission is to help socially concerned organizations become more effective in their efforts to build healthier, stronger, and more vital communities through the following goals : to discover what works, good practices, and lessons learned in a variety of community-building arenas, and get these findings into the hands of those who can put them to good use, resulting in more widespread use of these practices; to build the capacity of socially concerned organizations, by helping them improve upon their own and others' experiences with community-building efforts, resulting in improved capacity for communities and their organizations; and to engage whole networks, associations, and systems in exploring and integrating principles of effectiveness, resulting in more sustainable and more influential networks.

Wilder Research
Wilder Research is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit research and evaluation groups dedicated to practical research in the field of human services. Wilder Research works with more than 100 organizations each year to study the effectiveness of their services and to understand trends and issues that affect their work.
