About
these videos
At this site, you'll find nearly three hours of video taken from
990s Do Matter, a training designed and conducted by Eve
Rose Borenstein for the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, with
the support of the Otto Bremer
Foundation, in January 2009.
Video links
on the right are broken down by presentation sections, and you'll
want to download the presentation
slides (3.06 MB, PDF) and the sample
form (2.12 MB, PDF) used during the training prior
to viewing. We've tried to make each section roughly 10 minutes
or less to allow you to learn at your own pace.
The IRS has
completely overhauled the Form 990 effective for years begun after
December 31, 2007. Nonprofits of all kinds have a stake in not only
learning about the changes and filing their forms correctly, but
taking proactive measures to reform their operations as required
by the new form. Also see our Form 990 Resources page with links
to articles and other online resources about changes to the form.
About
the presenter
Course author and instructor Eve Borenstein has
taught Form 990 essentials for almost two decades to nonprofit organization
managers and consultants, as well as to the CPA community. She co-chairs
the American Bar Association Form 990 Task Force and helped the
IRS develop the Redesigned Form.
Eve’s
law practice focuses on the impact of tax and regulatory rules
applied by the IRS and state agencies on "tax-exempt"
and/or public benefit organizations. Over the course of the past
19 years, Eve has built a national practice, consulting with CPAs
and individual nonprofit organizations on tax planning and filing
matters. She has represented more than 850 tax-exempt organizations
before the IRS on audits, exemption applications and status correspondence.
In addition to her federal tax practice, she also counsels organizations
on the practical application of governance and various other state
statutory mandates and/or aspirational "best practices."
Technical
specifications for the videos
All videos are progressive download in Adobe
Flash. You will need Flash player 8.0.24 or newer to run. If
you do not have that version of the viewer, you will automatically
be prompted to get it, or you can install it here.
(Flash is currently at version 10+ so this is a fairly 'old' version.
Flash has a 98+% installed based worldwide - you probably already
have it.)
The videos play
best on a DSL or better connection. Remember, both DSL and cable
are affected by the number of users on the line and the intensity
of the use, like file downloading. If the video starts slow, just
pause it and let the progress bar 'grow' a little before resuming.
Most DSL or better connections will have no problem at all.
